Want to learn how to create an amazing exit intent popup in your WordPress site, but not sure how it works?
Exit intent popups appear when a website visitor is about to leave your website, and offers them an incentive to stay (i.e. free course, discounts, custom offer, etc.).
This is detected when a user attempts to click that “X” in the top right corner of the browser, hit the back button, edit the address bar, or open a new tab.
It’s purpose? To re-engage your visitors in a final attempt to persuade them to stay on your site longer.

How to Create an Amazing Exit Intent Popup in WordPress
While there are so many lead generation tools in the market today, nothing comes nearly as close to what OptinMonster has to offer.
This is a powerful, all-in-one marketing tool that helps you capture leads and skyrocket your website conversions with interactive popups.
And the best part? It’s super easy to use and beginner-friendly!
Although in today’s tutorial I’ll show you how to add the popup to WordPress, it can also be used on other platforms such as BigCommerce and Shopify. Simply follow the same steps in this guide.
Step 1: Join OptinMonster
Firstly, you’ll first need to sign-up with OptinMonster and select a Pro plan.
You can try it 100% risk-free as it comes with an unconditional 14-day money-back guaranteee.
No questions asked, ever!
Step 2: Create A New Campaign
Once you’ve signed up, click Create New Campaign from your OptinMonster dashboard.
From here, select your campaign type: Popup.
Next, you’ll need to select a template for your exit intent popup.
OptinMonster offers over 50 awesome pre-built templates that you can customize to match your website’s branding and colors.
And, you’re no longer limited to only one device type. OptinMonster allows you to filter templates to display on either Desktop/Tablet or Mobile Optimized devices.
For this tutorial, we’ll go with the Desktop/Tablet filter.
From here, choose your template. We’ll select the Shopping template.
This works best for any eCommerce store.
After that, name your campaign and select the website you want your popup to display on.
Then click Start Building.
Now, on to the fun part!
Step 3: Design Your Campaign
OptinMonster’s easy drag and drop editor takes away all the hassles of designing your popup with no coding skills required, whatsoever.
To personalize your campaign, simply point and click on any elements you wish to change.
You can also customize your campaign by adding a ton of cool features like texts, buttons, chatbox, images, video, and colors to match your brand.
When your design is good to go, it’s time to set the exit-intent triggers.
Step 4: Display Your Exit-Intent Popup
To determine where and when the popup should be triggered on your website, you’ll need to set up the rules.
For this, click Display Rules located at the top of your editor.
Next, select Exit Intent.
Select the device you’d like your popup to appear on: mobile only, desktop only, or on all devices.
We’ll choose on all devices for this tutorial.
From here, select your Exit-Intent Sensitivity.
Let’s stick with the default setting and keep it at Medium.
Yayy, your campaign is now set! Your popup will appear on all pages of your website.
Keep in mind, though, you can always customize these settings and target your users based on their behaviors.
For example, you can change the trigger to when a visitor adds a product to their cart, and then attempts to leave your website without completing their purchase.
In addition to this, you can display your popup when a user:
- Doesn’t add a product to their cart
- Views a particular product
- Browses through a specific product category
- Has a certain number of products in their cart
- Reaches a specific subtotal in their cart
Let me quickly show you how you can pull up other targeting options:
From your drop-down menu under trigger options, click Ecommerce.
Here, you’ll see several different options to integrate your popup with an eCommerce store.
Select the one that applies to you.
Since this tutorial is about WordPress, we’ll choose WooCommerce.
These options will allow you to further target your visitors in order to increase conversions.
And that’s all!
Enabling an exit intent popup on your website is a great way to drive more leads and boost conversions.
Having a powerful plugin like OptinMonster makes it easy to engage your users and generate more leads.
